The Cast of Scarlet City (So far......! Inspector Lester
Physical Description –
-Short and stocky -modeled after Lestrade, the Scottland Yard Inspector who helped Sherlock Holmes get many of his cases. -partially bald, bald on top with hair around. -No moustache -wears a suit and tie, always, as befitting his rank on the police force. -wears a hat, like a scottland yard inspector at the turn of the 20th century would.
Personality – Lester’s primary role in this work is to serve as the link between the two main characters and the official police force. He is a good police officer, but an older man than the other characters, and he’s the one who introduces our heroes to the facts of the case, and who comes in to clean up the mess after the action sequence. We get to know very little about Lester’s personality because he’s mainly a plot device. However, there is a reason why he, as an official police officer, trusts Nathan and Slick with what could be described as “sensitive information” and it has more to do with than just that he thinks Nathan and Slick can get results. There is a past between these three characters, which will be explored in future issues, but, for now, he’s mostly plot device.
Steve Foyer
Physical Description –
-Average looking man -normal black hair -was wearing a tweed flannel suit with a stripped tie when he died -no moustache -no hat
Personality –
Not much is known about Steve Foyer, except that he has some connection to the criminal underworld of Seacliff Heights, and to the Saint, and that someone wanted him dead. However, the thing that stands out the most about Foyer is the theatricality of his death, he wasn’t simply murdered in cold blood, someone wanted the whole world to know that this man was dead (there’s no other reason to plant the body at the home of the two most famous movie stars in the world, the paparazzi would then spread the news far and wide). His connection to the saint is particularly puzzling, as there is definitely a past there that will be explored.
James Foster
Physical description – -very good looking man, very handsome -middle aged -one of the world’s most famous actors -dressed very extravagantly on the first page of the issue (he and his wife were returning home from a night on the town) -no moustache -no hat.
Personality –
James Foster’s principle role in the first issue is to find the body of the murdered man and to call the police. Later on, around issue four, we’ll find out that there’s far more to the world’s most famous actor than meets the eye. For now, only his look is important.
Melissa Foster
Physical Description –
-wife of James Foster -one of the world’s most famous actresses -extremely beautiful -blonde hair that is shoulder length -wearing a beautiful black dress. -wearing high heels -wearing a pearl necklace
Personality –
Not much is know about Melissa Foster, as future issues will deal primarily with her husband. However, she performs two key roles in the first issue, first, she points out the first clue to the murder on page one, and second, she faints at the sight of the murdered man. She is faint of heart (which is why she fainted, or is it?), and she is a jealous woman who always has to win and be the best at everything. Her husband is capable of giving credit where its due, and he’s the more level-headed of the two of them.
Jimmy the Turnpike
Physical description –
-black hair -goatee -visible tattoo on his left shoulder (is that important?) -muscular fellow -a drunkard -no hat -very terse with his words.
Personality – Jimmy’s primary role in this story is as an informant to Nathan and Slick. Jimmy will do anything for money, and he plays both sides of the game. He’ll take close to any job and work for the worst of criminals, and then, sell information on his mis-deeds to the law. He’s mostly harmless, despite his appearance, and the reason why he’s free, and not in prison, is because the police, and slick and Nathan, know that Jimmy’s will do anything for whoever pays his bar tab.
Mr. W
Physical description –
-blonde hair -wears a white safari style hat -wears glasses -wears an all white suit with a black dress shirt and white shoes. -carries a black cane with a diamond mounted at the top. Doesn’t need it to help him walk, he just likes having it. -Very slight moustache, a fine line of hair on his upper lips going both ways. Sort of a French style moustache
Personality –
Mr. W is the first villain we meet in this story, and he obviously knows whose behind the murder at the Foster place, which is the case that Nathan and Slick are trying to solve. Mr. W may be a crook, but he’s an organizer, a schemer, not a do-er, so its unlikely he was personally responsible for the murder. Mr. W considers himself an intellectual, and he sees the physical labor of actually committing a crime as beneath him. However, even at planning crimes, he typically is defeated by our heroes because there’s one gaping hole in his plot that he just doesn’t see, this is the reason why he never rises above criminal middle management (there’s an excellent example of this in the first issue). Mr. W considers himself a man of substance and of refinement, which is why he always chooses the most elaborate traps for our heroes to escape from. He also loves the sound of his own voice, and of hearing himself talk, which is why he wastes time gloating.
The two ninjas
Physical description
-average size, and average build -wear all black uniforms, with only eye holes for seeing.
Personality –
The two ninjas that are defeated in combat by our two heroes as they pursue an escaping mr W. Nothing is known about their personalities, other than that they are, apparently, completely loyal to their boss (is that Mr. W, or do they work for someone else?)
Slick Silver
Physical description –
-all American man -good looking -dresses in a nice dress shirt -always wears nice dress pants -black dress shoes -no moustache -no hat -black hair, neatly combed
Personality –
Slick and Nathan, in addition to being best friends, are co-workers, and Slick is the brains of the outfit. Why Slick chooses to hang around with Nathan is something of a mystery in and of itself, and is one that we see the solution to as time goes on. Slick always has a witty retort to Nathan’s odd remark or canned phrase. Slick is also the better fighter between the himself and Nathan, and when the time comes for action, Slick is a man whose bravery can be relied upon.
Nathan Shome
Physical description –
-taller than his friend, slick silver, with a long face that makes him look a bit taller. -always wears his utility belt -always wears his deer-stalker hat -always wears his long, flowing trench coat -an average looking man -no moustache
Personality –
Nathan is more than just a bumbling idiot, he does most of the comic relief, but there is intelligence to him. However, its just that Slick is the smarter and wiser man, and both of them know it. Nathan is extremely kind, and very warm hearted (in contrast to Sherlock Holmes, the man he tries to be like) and this, plus his tendency to bumble things, lends him a charm that makes him quite endearing. While Slick is a man of action, Nathan doesn’t hang back, and he always tries his best. Also, when there is the question of a friend in need, Nathan has no qualms or questions, he’s ready to risk his life for a pal at a moment’s notice.
Ms. Alice Cooper AKA The Saint
Description –
-medium Height woman of extraordinary beauty. -light black, shoulder length, hair (is it her natural color?) -wears a pretty black and white dress, and normal shoes. -no hat (ie, she’s not a nun, and she’s not in a convent)
Personality –
We get to know very little of Ms. Alice Cooper in the first issue, other than that’s she’s shocked by the murder of Mr. Foyer, who she describes as a friend to her little church. There is clearly a back story, however, as to how someone who seems so good is in bed with people who are so evil, and there’s an even more interesting back story to the saint’s character. If you’re wondering why I sometimes refer to Alice Cooper as Ms. Alice Cooper and sometimes as the Saint, well, that comes in the second and third issue, where her character is fleshed out. For now, all we do is make her acquaintance. |
